Marco Island

Marco Island, the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands is on the Gulf Coast just a two hour drive through the Everglades from Miami and four hours from Orlando. Built around a canal system, this exclusive Island, measuring only six miles by four, is tranquil, idyllic and the perfect place for a safe family holiday in the sun.

With its beautiful white sands stretching all down the west side of the Island, the beaches are un-crowded and un-spoilt. The inviting warm blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico are a perfect place to bathe or to simply spot the many dolphins that come close to the shore. In particular, the beach provides a perfect vantage point to watch the breathtaking sunsets. The South Beach offers jet skiing and even paragliding, while Tigertail beach in the north of the Island has kayak rentals, pedalos and a children's play ground. There are only four public access points to the beach (but no restrictions once you get on it, all areas are public). Three are for South beach, the nearest being a mere 5 minute walk away from our home and the others a 12 and 20 minute walk. This makes our home ideally located for a morning walk on the beach, a day at the beach or to watch the spectacular sunsets in the evening. Tigertail beach is a 5 minute drive. (Note: High rise condos / hotels / buildings are restricted to the back edge of the beach area and are not allowed elsewhere on Marco).

It is the ideal place for those who enjoy water sports - with jet skiing, boat rentals, fishing excursions and even paragliding available on the Island. From the local marina you can take a day trip to Key West, join a sight seeing or dinner cruise around the Island. Highly recommended is to hire your own boat and sail to beaches inaccessible by land and into Naples. Sighting of dolphins is 99% guaranteed and if you are really lucky, you may see a wild manatee. Deep sea or back water fishing excursions go from the Island (and Naples), either go in a group or charter your own boat with a captain. This is fun for all the family - even those with no experience and you get to keep the fish you catch (they'll clean them for you)! We even supply a fishing so you can go fishing for free off the Naples pier (20 minutes away).

The Island has a large number of unique boutiques and stores, providing for all your needs and over 70 restaurants. Although our home is located on a quiet residential road, "The Marco Walk" is  only a five minute walk away. Here you will find several restaurants including Italian, Mexican,  International cuisine, a fish and seafood restaurant, a sushi bar, Irish Pub and Grille (serving Guinness and British beers) and a Sports Bar.  In addition to these, there are a further 4 restaurants within 5 minutes of our home. At night, the Marco Walk becomes a lively place to visit and you can choose to eat outside or indoors in air conditioned comfort. It is also the home of the local cinema which offers you the almost unique experience of being able to dine as you watch the movie. There are several stores offering a range of items including crafts and gifts, beach items, clothes and an ice cream parlor.  In addition, there are many more shops and restaurants located elsewhere on the Island.

Naples is only a 20 minute drive away and with  its large shopping mall, factory outlet shops, stylish downtown area and the famous Tin City with its unique small craft shops, it is a haven for shoppers. Naples also offers its own beautiful beaches, giving even more choice to the holiday maker. It also has a zoo, miniature golf course (crazy golf) and Go karting. For those who enjoy horse riding (you don't need to be an expert!), you can even go trail riding into the Mangroves at the nearby M & H Stables, a 20 minute drive away just off the 951.

For the serious shopper, venture to the Miromar factory outlet center a 45 minute drive away (up the I75) where most of the major labels have stores.

Florida is also known for its conservation and wildlife and in the Marco/Naples area you can visit several conservation centers where you learn about all the local flora and fauna. It's a 25 minute drive to the Everglades where you can enjoy rides on airboats, a swamp buggy and even visit an Alligator farm. There are also various Eco tours (by foot, Kayak or boat) where you go in search of wildlife including Manatees.

Golfers paradise is one way of describing Florida. This area of Florida is no exception. With at least six public courses within 30 minutes and many more within a 45 minute drive, you will be spoilt for choice. All the courses are of the highest standard, with the beautiful Lely Resort offering a choice of two championship courses designed by Lee Trevino and Robert Trent Jones. Rates in the summer are very reasonable and can be as little as $40 a round (including cart).  You can even go golfing at night at a nearby floodlit course! Our home also boasts a full set of golf clubs (Titleist irons) so you don't even have to take your clubs.

Not too far away in Tampa is Busch Gardens which you can drive to in just under 3 hours or go to Disney which is 3½ - 4 hours away. Miami can be reached in 2 hours.
